The radiative impact of water ice clouds from a reanalysis of Mars Climate Sounder data

چکیده
The radiative impact of water ice clouds on the atmosphere of Mars is analyzed via a reanalysis of Mars Climate Sounder (MCS) temperature and ice opacity profiles. Polar hood clouds only have a small radiative impact, while tropical clouds increase diurnally averaged temperatures at the 10 Pa level by ∼10–15 K. Cloud radiative heating strengthens the meridional overturning circulation, increasing temperatures in the polar warmings by ∼6–8 K and temperatures in the tropics by ∼2 K (due to increased dust mass). The positions and wind speeds of the tropical and high-latitude jets are also modified through changes to the meridional temperature gradients. An effective ice particle radius of reff = 1.4 μm produces temperatures around the aphelion cloud belt in close agreement to MCS temperature retrievals. For high-altitude tropical clouds during northern autumn, a better agreement is found using reff = 0.8 μm.

The Radiative Impact of Water Ice Clouds from Assimila- Tion of Mars Climate Sounder Data
Introduction: Here we investigate the radiative impact of martian water ice clouds on the atmospheric temperature and circulation via the assimilation of Mars Climate Sounder (MCS) temperature and ice opacity profiles, and dust optical depths, into a Global Climate Model (GCM). Recent observational and modelling studies have begun to reveal the importance of water ice clouds in terms of modifyi...
متن کاملWater ice clouds in a martian global climate model using data assimilation
The water cycle is one of the key seasonal cycles on Mars, and the radiative effects of water ice clouds have recently been shown to alter the thermal structure of the atmosphere. Current Mars General Circulation Models (MGCMs) are capable of representing the formation and evolution of water ice clouds, though there are still many unanswered questions regarding their effect on the water cycle, ...

[1] The Reanalysis derived from the UK Mars general circulation model assimilation of Thermal Emission Spectrometer temperature and dust opacity retrievals at present provides the best estimate of the evolving state of the Martian atmosphere over the course of the Mars Global Surveyor mapping mission. A Control simulation has also been carried out using the same evolving dust distribution as th...
متن کاملWater Ice Clouds in the Martian Atmosphere: a Comparison of Two Methods
Introduction: Over the past decade there has been an increased interest in water-ice clouds in the Martian atmosphere and the role they may play in the water cycle. Water-ice clouds in the Martian atmosphere have been inferred, historically, through observations of " blue " and " white " clouds [1], but the first positive confirmation of water-ice in the atmosphere came during the Mariner 9 mis...

Mars Climate Sounder (MCS) is a midand far-infrared thermal emission radiometer on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. It measures radiances in limb and nadir/on-planet geometry from which vertical profiles of atmospheric temperature, water vapor, dust and condensates can be retrieved in an altitude range from 0 to 80 km and with a vertical resolution of km. MCS has been taking measurements ...
